Garbage with a Pretty Case

Last year I was looking for an lowcost notebook computer for basic tasks such as writing web code, office documents, and most times looking at Netflix or light gaming (older games like Half-Life, Red Faction, DOSBox games, etc.). I think it’s also reasonable to note that I would consider my computer aptitude to be above intermediate but by no means a superuser. That is, I am ordinarily competent of solving my own problems, creating my own troubles through deliberate tinkering (then fixing them), and I’m that friend that every one has that they ask to fix their computer problems.

Good Afforadable Computer

It’s a great computer for the price. I love the keypad,and the screen is very pretty. I love that it has 4 USB ports, and an HDMI port so I may hook it up to the tv. It plays most of my video games fine, and gets very warm when playing the Sims 3. I haven’t had any real troubles with it over the past 7 months, but the software it came with from BestBuy was less than helpful, and the touchpad is annoying to use, even though using a mouse solves this problem. The only significant problem I’ve had is the screen not turning on when I open the laptop on occasion. I close and open the screen again, and it works fine, but it is annoying each once in a while.

Piece of Garbage

I purchased this computer a little over a year ago, after reading the marginal reviews and “taking my chances”. Oops. Low and behold, just like assorted other people had said, the trackpad stopped working. Seems to be worse when there is something running in the background specially Windows Updates). So I expended $35 on a wireless mouse. Problem solved, but still annoying because who wants to lug around a mouse? Well, over the next year I now have a broken “m” key and the powercord no longer with resolute determination attaches to it’s hole, it’s all wobbly and dodgy.

I will have to mention I am an adult professional, only use my computer a few times a month, and don’t actually carry it around with me much. So it’s been very gingerly used.

Best of luck, hopefully you run for the hills after reading this review.

cheap junk – poor “tech support”

This printer is a cheap hunk of junk. Arrived DOA. The so-called “technical support” (wasn’t all that technical, and would rather interrupt me that help me) was useless in settling the issues. The “latest” drivers are over two years old, and still broken.

If you may get it to work, it might be OK, but my experience is that you’ll get frustrated with the unit and the abysmal “technical support” first, and return it.

Excellent Label Printer

I purchased the Wasp WPL305 5 years ago and have not been disappointed. It has printed out thousands of labels a year without a single problem. Setup is a breeze. Sharing it on the LAN makes it without apparent effort accessible to everyone in the office and once you set it up you may forget it – zero maintenance, no calls for support, it just flat out works. When I did have to call Wasp for aid on getting the proper ribbons they were very helpful. The most nontechnical user in the office may swap out the ribbons. This is effortlessly one of my best hardware purchases ever.

Not commended due to buggy firmware

I can not commend this product. Although it looks outstanding on paper — each port supports PoE *and* 10/100/1000 Mb Ethernet — it is badly crippled by extraordinarily buggy firmware. The web management interface is so broken as to be useless; you must fundamentally treat this device as even though it were an unmanaged switch (ie., no VLANs, no ACLs, etc) and consider the price you will compensate accordingly.

The unit has three small, high speed fans that are much too noisy for use in a home except perchance in a garage, but I have been unable to find any comparable units that don’t likewise have multiple fans.

Installing the latest firmware did not help. It helped a little to have half a dozen dissimilar web browsers on my computer (Safari, Opera, Firefox, Seamonkey, Camino, Chrome) as some management webpages might render on Opera but not Firefox, and others might render on Chrome but not Opera, and so on. But I held running into a few pages that would not render or behave in the right manner on ANY browser. E.g., my try to set up a VLAN ran into a brick wall as clicking the “apply” button had no effect on any browser I tried.

I sent one page to an online HTML validation service and got dozens of HTML protocol violations. That in all probability explains the rendering troubles and the inconsistent results amongst browsers.

I will have to have shipped this piece of junk back for a refund while I could, but I foolishly believed that Netgear wouldn’t let such buggy firmware go unfixed for very long. I was wrong.

Nice Switch But LOUD Fans

Very nice switch. This is the heart of the CAT6 network in my new home. Speeds are super-fast and the PoE works great. I am only powering two gimmicks right now, but the default configuration identified and in the right way powered both of them. Web interface works outstanding in IE8. Haven’t tried it in other browsers. Don’t recognise what Mr. Karn (other reviewer) is talking about. Web interface looks nice and works utterly for me, and my browser doesn’t report any errors. Interface offers very high level of configuration and monitoring.

The stock fans ar LOUD. Apparently this is a problem with closely each gigabit PoE switch on the market. This one is gravely loud. Too piercing to use in any typical business environment, and unquestionably way too piercing for installation in a residential environment. My data rack, including this switch, is in a little storage area beneath my stairs and behind the laundry closet. Even buried in there, the stock fans were so deafening that I could listen them allround half of my house. I am not exaggerating. That is the bad news. The good news is that the stock fans (there are three of them) may be without apparent effort substituted with your choice of quieter 40mm 3-pin fans. I substituted mine and altogether solved this issue. Now the thing is almost silent when you are sitting next to it, but it is still getting very good active cooling. Just make sure you choose a 40mm fan that runs at high sufficient RPM so that it won’t trigger ceaseless “not operational” warnings in the switch’s logging functions. 3800 RPM ought to do it. Interestingly, in the course of opening up the unit to swap the fans, I never came upon one of those adverse stickers that says removal/opening voids warranty. The metal case opens up without apparent effort by way of without doubt or question visible screws. Very easy to swap out the fans and reassemble the unit to cosmetic perfection.

This is an splendid switch save for the problem of the ridiculously piercing fans. That problem is solvable. I rated it down one star from perfective for this reason.

Not Ready For Prime Time… Yet

I not long back purchased this and set it up and was very impressed with it until I got in to the nuts and bolts of attempting to incorporate it in to my existent network. I believe that most of the Web Interface Issues have been resolved altho it is very slow but not much slower than my GS724T (none POE Switch).

The reason I am returning this is that the VLAN functionality of the switch is crippled. VLAN 1 which is the “Default VLAN” is editable which according to Netgear is intended for all of their new switches. I have installed dozens of Netgear Prosafe Devices over the years and most not so long ago numerous of the New GS108T and GS724T Switches and they ALL grant VLAN 1 to be edited. While this might not seem like a huge deal this is a huge security issue and if you want to for VLAN Tagging you can’t for VLAN 1 which does not make any sense.

One one hand this was by design but yet in the firmware release notes this is a known issue so it leads me to believe that it will ultimately be resolved by firmware. If / when they do this will be a great switch.

The masters are Nice Design, a decent price point, nice web interface and the POE works like a charm.

The other negatives are the Web UI are is SLOW, a little buggy with the need to refresh once in a while and the fans are very noisy with a fixed speed so keep that in mind if you are placing this in a quiet room.

Doesn’t Center

I would give this product a 1 star if Saitek didn’t do such a outstanding occupation of engineering science this product. It veritably looks finelooking and fits my hand like a glove but the one I recieved was useless. I expended hours attempting to get the stick to center, got frustrated and boxed it up for return. We aren’t talking a little amount either. In a lot of strength sensing settings it was close to 1/3 the total defection. I later came accross Saiteks repair (which took 6 months after freeing the product) on the internet which required deleting some registry keys and what not. So I unpacked the product which is a lot of work since they package it very well. To be fair, I had to give it one more chance. I followed the instructions and repeated the procedure assorted times but to no avail. I am a software developer so I recognise my way around a computer. In fact I have written various calibration routines for strain gauge load cells in industrial apps (which is what’s used for the strength sensing in this stick). Load cells do float around and need to be calibrated occasionally. They could without apparent effort put a button on the side or run the simple math routine on begin up. Well after their calibration procedure it was still all over the place in dissimilar strength settings. Especially at the lower end which are genuinely the only usable settings. Higher settings require a ton of pressure for full deflection. I then call Saitek client help and talked to them for regarding an hour. They were kind and personable but the person I talked to didn’t recognise as much as I did in regards to the product. I do a lot of exploration and commonly read the manual before buying just when it comes to anything (obviously not sufficient on this product). They didn’t know Saitek had a routine to repair this problem inefficient as it is. They at last accorded the product was wrong and wanted me to return the stick to them. This is a known issue. It’s a crapshoot to get a good one. It’s hard to believe they could put so much into this beautifully designed product but fail so miserable at the electronics. Before you buy this stick type “X-65f Centering Problem” into your browser and see what comes up. At over $300, this is a hardcore gaming product. You will find the best reviews on avid gaming forums. Even if you use dead zones which help mask the problem you end up with uneven pressure left and right or up and down. No cuts to Amazon. They were fast in refunding the buy price and initial shipping cost and made it simple to do so. As always 5 stars for them.

Photos merely don’t do this flight system justice! I’d researched flight sticks for months, and though I had my sights set on the new Warthog Hotas, it was just too much $$$. I don’t feel I’ve gone defective purchasing the Saitek X-65F, far from it. The joystick takes getting used to as it is all pressure sensitive, ie the stick itself does not move. And there are four dissimilar pressure sensible settings you may set and change on the fly.

The product is very lasting and heavy, not similar to the sentiment you get from pictures. The joystick and throttle unit look like plastic, but they’re not. They’re all metal. I have so a good deal of hat-switches I’ve yet to find a control for all of them in FSX. I’ve unquestionably no qualms regarding this flight scheme and I think it is worth the money. I tried the Saitek yoke/rudder pedal scheme and it was all just too bulky for the room I had available, but the X-65 fits the bill perfectly.

If you plan on utilizing ALL of the controls amongst the stick and throttle, you’re better off creating a profile through the SST programming software.

If there is one downside, it is that Saitek needs to provide software that allows you to center the rudder on the joystick. Mine is a tad off to the left which makes a divergence when taxiing about. It isn’t cheap, but I’d say if you have the cash and are looking for a flight control scheme that sets the bar high, then it is unquestionably worth it.
