Really Excellent

PLUSES: Takes 2gb memory module; SD card can be used for ReadyBoost; easy access to memory, PCI-e card slot, and hard drive via “pop off” bottom cover; available slot for PCI-e card (in my case, a Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator, $25 mail order, but you may want to insert a 3G card etc.); MATTE SCREEN for glare free viewing; more ergonomic keyboard than most in this category; earphone jack is also compatible with “headsets” with combined stereo earphones and mono microphone; no bottom vent slots that are easy to block if set down on a carpet or other soft surface.

MINUSES: Shorter battery life (on this entry level 3 cell battery model); “standard” netbook screen resolution (there is an HP Mini 210 HD version available with a higher than normal resolution screen); “simpler, ” non-multi-gesture touch pad (but it works very well); “speed step” is not implemented, although the N450 Atom chip now supports it (see the Asus 1001p if you want this feature for extended battery life); fan runs a little more to circulate air, there are no bottom slots to pull air through; no stereo microphone slot.

Since these netbooks have a built-in microphone on the screen, and speakers under the keyboard, it’s easy to Skype on them without a headset in “speakerphone” mode.

On the horizon (next 3 months): N470 Atom processors running at 1.83 ghz instead of the N450 in the current models running at 1.66 ghz; but the fact that this one has a PCI-e card for the Broadcom Crystal HD card is probably more important than the upcoming boost in speed (which will also run the battery down more quickly).

INITIAL IMPRESSSIONS:

Prices have come down on the HP Mini 210 series at Amazon to the point where there is no reason to go with another maker (Acer is generally the price leader) unless you are looking for a particular feature (like wireles “n” instead of “g”, a 6 cell battery for the same price etc). As promised by the reviews I read, the HP Mini 210 is slightly better designed (keyboard doesn’t flex, keyboard is more ergonomic) and finished than its competition (I have owned Acer, Gateway, eMachines, and MSI Wind netbooks – no Asus so far).

The HP Mini 210 is also “cleaner” finished – no advertising stickers on the front panel below the keyboard, even the Win7 license sticker and other “bottom of computer” stickers are gone, the Win7 license sticker is inside the case (where it can’t get smudged, a big plus, should you set it down on a gob of jam on your breakfast counter).

I purchased this 3 cell battery model expressly to keep weight down and keep the case smaller (the 6 cell battery version isn’t flush to the case). I got to save $40 as a result, which is an extra bonus. The old HP Mini 110 was rated at 3.75 hours with a 3 cell, with the new chipset in this one, battery life jumps to 4.25 rated hours. Keep in mind reading the NY Times on line with the screen dimmed will give much better battery life than watching transcoded h.264 videos with full screen brightness (in non-geek speak, reading is less taxing than movie watching).

Please note this has a MATTE screen. Not impressive in a showroom, where glossy screens just seem to sparkle, but MUCH better for actually watching video and working, no reflections to reduce image quality. Matte screens are actually rarer than the glossy variety – most Acers are glossy, the Asus 1001p (nearest competitor to this HP Mini 210 “no frills” edition) is matte too.

Manufacturers approach upgrades 3 ways: the Acers generally have little hatches held down by screws and snaps which allow access to the memory module, available PCI-e slot, and hard drive; MSI has no hatches but lots of screws (to remove the entire back panel) and an ominous “warranty voided!” sticker; and this HP seeming has no hatches OR screws.

Fortunately before this arrived I was reading the HP on-line documentation (which is much better than Acer’s and eMachines) and they showed how to pop off the bottom panel to access the memory module, PCI-e slot, and harddrive – it’s pretty easy to do, and I marveled at HP’s design team when I snapped it back together. The PCI-e slot, BTW, is included in most netbooks so you can install a 3G telephone wireless card; some netbooks have two such slots; some have a slot shared with the wireless LAN card; but this HP has a single, uncluttured slot and I used mine for the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card. This card is designed to accelerate certain video streams (but not all); it is supposed to work with Windows Media Player if it is decoding H.264 video (the current “standard”); with Hulu and other sites running Flash for video support (but not too well yet, Flash 10.1 has not yet been released and is still buggy); and with some DVD/BluRay software player programs. For $25 mail order from Hong Kong (off eBay) I was willing to give it a try.

This HP accepted a standard netbook memory module upgrade to 2gb without a hitch – no BIOS adjustments required. Check crucial dot com for memory specs; usually, but not always, when Amazon tells you other customers ordered a particular memory module to go with a particular netbook, you will be ok.

The fit and finish, ergonomics, and software welcome windows on the HP are much nicer than on any of the Acer variants (Acer makes Gateway and eMachines too) or the MSI’s I have – even the keyboard is easier to use, although still shrunken. The mini-led’s (really tiny dots) on the wireless function key on the top row of the keyboard, on the power slide switch on the side of the keyboard, and on the other side of the computer to indicate hard drive activity, each looks very classy. Be careful about pressing the top row function keys – unlike other netbooks, where you have to press the Fn activator key next to the space bar to access netbook functions (like wireless on or off, speakers on or off, volume, brightness) on this HP the top row keys default to netbook functions, and you have to use the Fn key next to the space bar to use them as normal F1-F12 function keys – while trying to hit F11 to maximize a browser window, I accidentally turned off my wi-fi.

I would have preferred to have the power switch under the cover, where it can’t accidentally be activated – it is on the right side of the case instead.

The touchpad works well – I don’t have my usual problem accidentally clicking when I meant to slide.

Although Pg Up and Pg Dwn aren’t labeled on the arrow keys, they are actually there, and activated by the Fn key near the space bar. The arrow keys themselves are laid out nicely in inverted “T” style.

Initial set up operations and downloards were quite zippy, felt quicker than on a 1gb Acer ao532h I just returned (but that may have been a function of the limitaton to 1gb on that Acer). Here are the Windows Experience Index numbers for this HP with an SD card inserted in the card reader and set up for ReadyBoost:

Processor, calculations per second: 2.4
Memory operations: 4.6
Graphics, Aero Desktop: 3.1
Gaming Graphics: 3.0
Disk operations: 5.3

Processor power # is the same as on my recent Walmart special eMachines 250 (N270 chipset, same as Aspire ao250 etc.), as are all the other numbers EXCEPT Graphics, Aero – Aero graphics on this new chipset jump from 2.1 to 3.1, a sizeable increase. (This number is not influenced by the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator card I added, it is the same number I saw on an HP Mini 210 at Costco).

So basically the new chipset, just introduced in December 2009, mainly just saves battery power, with some small performance increases – except for the graphics, which is one generation better than the last GMA 950 processors but not capable of DirectX functions (you have to get a machine with GMA 4500 or an Ion for that). (FWIW the new N450 chips also run Win7 64 bit, and have Speed Step instructions for changing the clock speed to save power on netbooks that have software support built-in).

I don’t intend to load a lot of programs on this netbook, so the 160 gb hard drive is fine for me. Part of that space is used by HP for a restore partition (in lieu of providing restore disks), and that restore partition, which mostly goes to waste, is thankfully smaller than usual.

If you intend to haul around a lot of converted video or lossless music (FLAC or Apples loss-less) or photos, you should definitely pop the extra $40 for the 250gb harddrive editions. My personal strategy is to use an external USB hard drive to hold my “library” and just download to the netbook as needed, so I am not as sensitive as some to hard drive sizes, and can remember then an 80gb hard drive in a laptop was “big.”

Finally, there is one very nice “feature” on this netbook that the others I have seen don’t have – it doesn’t have any vent slots on the bottom. It is engineered to vent solely through the side vent. This means you can actually set it on your lap or a soft surface without blocking any vents and overheating the unit. With our other netbooks and laptops we are scrupulous about placing them on a laptop board or cutting board, to keep access to the air vents open, but on this one we don’t have to worry about that. I’m good about keeping air vents open, but if you have kids who are going to set a netbook down on a plush carpet or on the bed, the HP Mini 210 is a better choice – they only have to keep the one set of side vents free and clear. Conversely, with no bottom vents, the bottom tends to get hot, but this does not bother me.

Great netbook with a decent integrated video card

The HP Mini 210 is a great netbook overall. It features a Intel GMA 3150 which is capable of streaming video over sites such as youtube, hulu, etc; it doesn’t stream any type of HD that great, however. I was even able to play older games such as Deus Ex, Aliens vs. Predator and even Unreal Tournament just fine. If you can’t afford to pay the extra $100 for the HP 311 which sports a Nvidia ION, this netbook will serve you well.

The keyboard is 93% full size and is great to type on. I’m a computer science student and I was delightfully surprised to see how comfortable it was to program on this netbook. If you plan to do any type of creative writing or programming, this netbook is ideal for that.

I admit, it’s taking me awhile to get use to the slower execution speeds and limits of multitasking with a netbook, but this HP seems to be faster then other netbooks I’ve tried. As long as you aren’t trying to perform more then 2-3 tasks at a time, all is well and speedy.

My major grip is with the touchpad. The left and right buttons aren’t independent of the touchpad itself; you can move the mouse if you move your finger within either click buttons. I like to keep my finger on the left button as a I navigate the touchpad with my other finger, but on this netbook it causes the pointer to jump around the screen. It’s just going to take a bit to change my style, but I would have preferred two buttons that were separate from the actual touchpad.

Battery is life is advertised at 4 hours, but I’ve seen around 3 thus far. As soon as a replacement 6-cell battery is released, I will be purchasing and that should satisfy my needs.

Okay, I’m just going to write a short, straight to the point review on this netbook. I first purchased this netbook here on Amazon when I received a $300 Amazon Gift-Card for completing online surveys. I originally owned an Acer Aspire and mostly IBM ThinkPads. So this was pretty much my first netbook I’ve ever owned. When I first opened it, I was surprised how small and lightweight this laptop was. It obviously has a 10.1″ screen and weighs less than 3 pounds so you can easily fit this laptop in a small backpack or even a larger purse! What you get out of the box are power cables, 3-cell battery, cleaning cloth, manuals, and the netbook. The netbook itself does a have a decent keyboard and a very sleek design compared to most other netbooks. Unlike most HP laptops, this one does not have any imprint finishes or designs on the cover. If you are getting this HP Mini or any netbook out there for the first time, it’ll take some time to get used to it since the screen is considerably much smaller and the computer runs slower. A few things I didn’t like about this netbook is that the cover of the laptop gets fingerprints very easily and the touchpad isn’t that good. Also, you’ll get only about 2 hours at most of batter life when fully charged. The main problem I have with the touchpad is that the clicking buttons are also part of the pad and you can move the mouse even by touching the clicking buttons. What happens is that your cursor may move all over the screen. Also, the screen it has is not one of those shinny, glossy ones, it’s a matte finish. This is a great laptop to buy if all you’ll need to do is listen to music, browse internet, do homework, or to check emails. If you’re like me, that creates websites and does video editing, this laptop is definitely not for you since this laptop will keep freezing. Netbooks are just for basic things and can only runs like 2-3 programs smoothly. I would definitely recommend this laptop and it runs at a very good price ($298.95) when I brought it.

No Dell support

First off, I need to mention that I am a big fan of Linux and in particular Linux mint 6 (a version of Ubuntu) for it’s free assortment of software and improved security over windows and OS 10. Linux lets me do everything I need to do with a computer such as Internet, office, bit-torrent, videos, and music. If it had software to let me use/sync my iphone to it’s fullest I would probably never use windows again … but I digress. I was in the market for an affordable netbook for my wife. All she uses a computer for is to word process, do email, and surf the internet. She isn’t the most savvy internet surfer and I’m concerned when she shops online about her letting hackers gain access to sensitive financial accounts. I initially considered a mac but decided against it for financial reasons. The Eeepc was also a choice but the odd arrangement of the touchpad was a turnoff. After seeing a similar linux netbook made by Dell (with their great reputation), I was sold. The netbook was easy to purchase from dell with plenty of options and arrived promptly. It worked great right away and behaved perfectly. It has it’s own flavor of Ubuntu 8.04 and made it easy for my wife to interact with it according to her limited needs. Eventually the Ubuntu automatic update kicked in and wanted me to update. Being a pc user this was not out of the ordinary since pc users are used to daily antiviral updates, firewall updates, spyware updates, and windows security updates … so I updated. After the restart it would not start, oops! I also did not have an external dvd/cd drive, double oops and couldn’t restore with the provided backup disk!! I called dell tech support but they told me that they did not support the os and that I should call canonical. Canonical said that they didn’t have a financial arrangement with dell and would not be able to help me. Being used to making linux flash drives I tried to make a flash drive out the provided dell software … didn’t work. I checked online for the dell linux OS iso image but dell deleted it. I called dell and they were of little support and didn’t know why the software was removed. Eventually I used an Ubuntu 8.04 flash drive and reinstalled the OS. I Could not get sound to work but my wife doesn’t do music or youtube and was content so I stopped there. I tried a Linux mint 6 flash drive but even it with all it’s extra drivers could not get the sound to work. Probably in time the necessary dell drivers will come out with one of the Linux versions and I’ll try again. The purpose of this review is to let potential buyers know that dell will not support you if you go the Linux route. If you do you may have a lot of work to do on your own to get it running once it crashes. Lastly even if you have an external drive you probably will still not be able to restore the OS. Problem with fan

I agree with the other reviewer about the fan cooler problem. I have owned this netbook since October. I started experiencing problems with the fan in December. I sent the computer in for repairs and am experiencing the same problem again. I own/ have owned 2 other VAIO’s and love Sony products, but this one is turning into a huge disappointment. Aside from the fan, everything else has worked great.

this netbook is definitely something we purchased for plenty of reasons. one was cause its a Sony. Secondly it works well over wireless with the playstation and the screen size and resolution is far superior than other netbooks on the market.

it’s definitely more expensive than the other netbooks but its definitely worth it!!!

I bought several netbooks and this by far is the best. I would prefer black, but I choose the white over brown. It won’t be long when they add a CD drive. If you need additional storage space an external hard drive will suffice. I am a name brand person and Sony held their name on this one. Its worth the extra few dollars. The hard drive and picture quality is superb. I do alot of traveling and this little bad boy is a perfect size for that and the appearance is none other, hey its a VAIO! I am a U.S. Contractor and taken this to the sand box (Iraq) and its been outside the wire many times and its built tough like the MRAPs. I do suggest buying a HP sleeve for it cause it fits perfectly and the neoprene is thicker.

Excellent investment

I am a mac user but wanted a windows computer to run certain programs. Therefore I needed the computer to be as easy to use and efficient as a mac. This is one of the best investments I have ever made. Its top of the line software and speed make it a joy to use. I certainly don’t regret this purchase.

Does what it’s designed to do.

This little netbook does what it’s designed to do. However, i did find Windows Starter 7 to be a little too limiting. So I installed a full version of Windows 7 and upgraded the RAM to 2 gigs.

Should be clearer in description

DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING ASUS SAYS.
This is a wonderfull product that for the money is unsurpassed. The biggest drawback is it has no Bluetooth. It says it does. All of Asus’s Literature says “Wireless/Bluetooth”. What they mean is it has wireless, and bluetooth is an option.(an option that I cannot find anywhere to order). This is clearly false and misleading. It has turned what would have been an exceptionoal experience into one of mistrust.

Nice Netbook

My daughter loves this one and takes it everywhere (school, bus, friends’ home, in the car etc…). Here are my evaluations:

Pros:

1) very portable. Smaller than some of my daughter’s textbooks
2) great battery life. She uses it all the time without the power cord and it never seems to be an issue of out of battery
3) the screen is very vibrant like Sony computers
4) it has more software then listed. It even has Microsoft Word. I would not be surprised if it has Power Point as well.
5) very nice looking (much better looking then Acer and HP or any other netbooks I have seen. We have a pink one)

Cons:

1) The memory of 1G is not fast enough. Sometimes it takes visibly longer times than our other computers to open webpages.
2) The mouse is hard to control because it only works when you press the either end of the touch pad which is rather awkward.

Overall, it seems to be a good quality sturdy computer. I am happy with my choice.

Love the mini!!

I absolutely love this laptop! It’s great for watching movies in the car while on a long trip. I surf the Internet, email, play games, and do my homework on this laptop. I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a small package with a lot to offer from a great company. I love HP’s so when I found the mini on Amazon I fell in love with it!

Sweet Little Computer

I have a number of laptops / netbooks / tablets. I needed another small form unit for a specific project and selected the HP Mini 110 primarily on a cost basis. Upon receipt I was impressed with the sturdiness of the computer. Unlike other netbooks I have the screen opens easily without the feeling that I might break something. The keyboard was also a suprise. I often struggle with less than full size keyboards and found this keyboard to be very comfortable. Speed could be a bit faster but I think a RAM upgrade to 2GB should cure that issue. The black case does show the fingerprints a bit more than I would like. Overall, for the price this is a no brainer -size and quality are perfect!

Did not work out of box!

This did not work out of box, screen would never turn on. So the product gets 1 star.

I have to give Amazon support 10 stars!!! They were so nice and got the return worked out and credit back same day so I could get a replacement on its way. This is why you should by from Amazon, you know they will take care of things if something is not right.

Good bang for the buck.

I’ve looked for a 12 in netbook for a long time and finally decided on my 1215B-MU17. I didn’t want to carry around a big bulky 15in, and 13in laptops didn’t seem that much smaller. Ten inch was too small, so 12 inch is a perfect compromise. I’ve had my 1215B for a couple of weeks now, and I absolutely love it. It comes with full 64 bit Win 7, 1 GHz e50 processor, and 1GB Ram (wich I upgraded to 4GB).

It’s a little thicker and heavier than I thought it would be, but that’s probably to accommodate the 6 cell battery. So far I’m very happy with the purchase. In my opinion it’s the best looking netbook out there. Initially I was going to buy the $200 Acer 722, which has the same specs as this one, but it looked really cheap and I didn’t like the design of it.

I’m unable to play 1080HD on youtube without stuttering.If you can justify paying additional $200 for better processor like the 1.6 Ghz E350, then by all means buy that, but even those (1215B PU17, 1215N) can’t play Netflix HD. Standard Definition will work for me just fine for now.

I really don’t understand people’s complaints about this model. The keyboard flexes, but so do keyboards on most other laptops (especially overpriced Sony). It’s fast enough for basic computing, office, internet, and streaming movies. It’s plastic, but it’s really well made and the metal touchpad button feels very upscale and expensive. Bottom line: for less than $300 you can’t go wrong!

-Long battery life (Approx. 5-6 hours of use)
-Smooth touchpad
-Dual core processor
-Good graphics card
-Portable size
-very quiet
-HDMI, and three USB ports

Cons:
-can’t play 1080HD on youtube because of weak CPU

Thanks to a reviewer of acer 722, I seem to have fixed the 1080HD playback on youtube. Just google “slickdeals AO722 Vision engine” and follow the instruction on the post, or read the post below:

“Improve video performance by updating the AMD C50 APU drivers. You do so by downloading and running this file from AMD’s site located here: http:[...]
Try this out for those of you that weren’t having good video playback. Also, turning off ‘Aero’ effect could help general performance.

I did a clean install of windows 7 and also noticed poor video playback on 1080p. I wanted to check to make sure the hardware acceleration was still active and stumbled on the setting in the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. Click on the video tab on the left hand side and then video settings. Make sure under “video playback” that the slider is on green for “apply current video quality settings to internet video”. This seemed to solved my 1080p problems with the youtube big buck bunny video. If you switch to full screen and it is still stuttering, click pause and rewind just a bit and hit play again. smooth as silk now!!! “

Good Battery Life (but not as good as advertized), plays nice with Linux.

This is a really nice netbook/laptop for the price. The battery life is very good. This laptop has the C-50 cpu that is less power hungry but slower than the 1215B-PU with the E-350 chip, making this the better choice if your primary objective is battery life. However, Asus does take considerable liberty with the truth on the battery life rating. With wireless turned on the battery lasts for 6.5 hours – tops, not 8 hours!

Unlike many smaller 10″ machines, the screen on this 12″ netbook is large enough for most uses, the keyboard is large enough keep typing tasks not-too-cramped and the PgUp, PgDown, Home, End and arrow functions get their own dedicated keys that are in the ‘right’ spot. Nice!

It would be nice if they made a big 80-90 watt hr extended battery to make this a true all day off the grid machine but I haven’t found one yet.

The machine works great running fedora 15. The installation takes a bit of finesse. The only method that worked for me was the hard-disk install method of the UNetbootin utility. I could not get the USB boot install method to work, nor could I get the machine to run the live version from a USB stick. The default windows install works OK once most of the ASUS preloaded trash is cleaned up. Both OS’s respond well to an upgrade to 2GB or more.

The laptop comes with windows 7 *64 BIT*, not the 32-bit version as stated in the Amazon description!

pretty good

had an asus x101 but the screen died after 3 weeks and amazon took it back. decided to go up to 12 inch screen.

first thing i did, after 2 days of incredibly slow Windows Premium, was install ubunto 11.10. what a difference. If you’re getting it to browse the web and some email it’s great. also comes with libre writer which can do ms word docs if you need it.

lot of complaints about the trackpad and it was jumpy with Windows but with Ubuntu it’s spot on. two finger side and up/down scroll works great.

it is a bit slow to start up but after it loads the web is quite speedy. i installed an extra gb of ram and also chromium browser.

typing is a whole lot better than on asus’ 10 inch models. it’s almost a full keyboard.

using this mostly with a verizon lte 4g hotspot and no issue on connectivity.

btw, i had never did linux before i got the x101 and it’s really quite easy to make a usb stick to boot from so you can test it out before installing. download unetbootin on your windows machine, start it up and choose ubuntu and it will make the usb bootable. you can also install ubuntu on a separate partition so you can have both and choose with one to boot into.

Very functional

Purchased for use in college courses. Mainly use Microsoft office software. Has exceeded expectations. Very fast. The wireless functions works perfectly at all wifi sites. Web surfing is good. Battery life could be longer. Currently getting 3.5 hours with light use and 2.5 hours with heavy use. Makes for an entertaining 3 hour night class. Battery does charge quickly so deductions for the battery. All in all I would recommend this product.

Meets expectations.

I have yet to use this computer for what it was intended which is travel but it sems to be everything I was wanting. I needed a remote mouse do to my Parkinson’s and it accepted it with no problems. Also I purchased a remote CD reader for adding games, etc and again it was no problem. Plenty of ports to use. All in all a fine product for this novice. I also received this product in a timely manner. Arriving well before it was scheduled. Terrific service.
